Before reading any further please note that Gem requires a fenced yard and will not be adopted out of state. She is a 2 year old pup that has had a challenging start to life but is well on her way towards learning how to be a loving and happy dog. She truly is a Gem. She and an 8 year old of the same mix were rescued from a Holmes County puppy mill on Dec 9, 2022. They were used as breeding dogs and never exposed to normal socialization and love most dogs know. In comparing to information and pictures on the internet, it does seem they might be "Poochon" which is a poodle and bichon frise mix. The 8 yr old has significantly more trauma to work through, but Gem has shown real progress since they came into our home on February 14. This has been our first experience with puppy mill breeding rescues and they have touched us deeply. It is a joy to watch Gem learning how to be a dog. She is constantly fascinated with watching the pack, and her new humans. She has shown interest in playing with toys, in playing with our other dogs, and boy can she run! She loves to zoom around the yard at high speed, relishing in her freedom. It makes me laugh to watch her having so much fun. And she has such a sweet silly face, so inquisitive, and almost a clownish personality that seems to be coming out. It took several weeks but she is taking treats out of my hand now. She is very food motivated with an excellent sniffer, suddenly appearing whenever new food is out in the kitchen! She is mostly trained on using pee pads but house training is a work in progress, as is leash training but every day brings a little improvement. Gem's perfect forever home should have three things. Well adjusted dog(s) that can continue to teach her how to be a dog, a fenced yard and extremely patient humans that can help her continue her journey towards becoming a family member in a loving home. Gem's adoption fee is $150 fully vetted. Save Ohio Strays does not have a shelter.
